General information

The Hotel Sonnengut is a 4-star superior wellness hotel in Bad Birnbach, Lower Bavaria, with its own 3,000-square-metre spa area and a location right on the sunny slope of the Rottal valley. It is ideal for both a classic wellness holiday and active or golfing holidays in the region.

What makes the Hotel Sonnengut so special is the combination of its own thermal water sourced directly from the Bad Birnbach spring, a spacious sauna and water park, and its peaceful setting in what is known as the ‘Lower Bavarian Tuscany’. The range of facilities is complemented by a variety of wellness, beauty and medical wellness treatments.  The Bella Vista Golf Park is located in the immediate vicinity, just 300 metres from the Hotel Sonnengut. Europe’s largest golf resort in Bad Griesbach is also just a few minutes’ drive away.

Both: The Hotel Sonnengut combines a classic wellness holiday with thermal baths and a sauna with a wide range of outdoor activities such as golf, cycling and walking, all right on the doorstep. This makes it the perfect way to combine a relaxing day in the spa with an active day out in the Rottal hills.

Yes, dogs are welcome at the Hotel Sonnengut, but only in certain rooms and subject to prior notification at the time of booking. Dogs are not permitted in the restaurant, the bar, on the sunbathing lawn or in the wellness area. The hotel charges a fee of 15 euros per day for a dog’s stay, excluding food.

In den Wellnessbereich, auf die Liegewiese sowie in Restaurant und Bar dürfen Hunde im Hotel Sonnengut nicht mitgenommen werden. Auf den Innenhof-Terrassen und der großen Sonnenterrasse beim Restaurant ist die Mitnahme des Vierbeiners hingegen erlaubt.

Rooms & Features

The Hotel Sonnengut offers comfort double rooms, comfort loft rooms, family rooms, single rooms and suites. The Comfort double rooms measure around 30 square metres. The comfort loft rooms have two levels, measuring approximately 35 to 40 square metres, whilst the suites range from 46 to 110 square metres, featuring a separate living area and bedroom, and in some cases two separate bedrooms.

A loft-style room spans two levels connected by a staircase, whilst a classic double room occupies a single level measuring around 30–35 square metres. Thanks to the extra living space and a sofa bed in the living area, the loft-style room is particularly suitable for guests or families who require more space.

The suites at the Hotel Sonnengut range in size from 46 to 110 square metres, and some feature two separate bedrooms on two levels with a balcony facing mainly south or south-west. They therefore offer considerably more space than the standard double rooms and are well suited to longer stays.

The room rate includes use of the 3,000-square-metre spa area and use of the fitness room. In addition, every room is equipped with a safe, minibar, television, radio, telephone, hairdryer and free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel.

Yes, the Hotel Sonnengut charges a supplement of 18 euros per day for single occupancy of a double room. 

Yes, all 88 rooms and suites at the Hotel Sonnengut have their own balcony or terrace. 

From the rooms and balconies at the Hotel Sonnengut, guests can enjoy views of the green, rolling hills of the Rottal valley, also known as the ‘Tuscany of Lower Bavaria’. (except for the balcony overlooking the illuminated courtyard)

Accessibility

The Hotel Sonnengut is accessible to guests with disabilities but is not fully equipped to meet their specific needs. The hotel has three lifts on different floors. Guests with reduced mobility are advised to discuss their individual requirements directly with the hotel before arrival.

Sustainability

For around 25 years, the Hotel Sonnengut has been committed to the responsible use of natural resources and has been awarded the Bavarian Environment and Climate Pact certificate in recognition of its commitment. Measures include, amongst other things, modern, energy-efficient pool technology and a green roof over the relaxation area.

The Bavarian Environment and Climate Pact is a voluntary agreement between the Bavarian State Government and participating companies, designed to promote corporate environmental and climate protection beyond the statutory requirements. The Hotel Sonnengut is a signatory to this pact and has been awarded an official certificate in recognition of this.

Among other things, the Hotel Sonnengut uses main power switches in all guest rooms, motion detectors in the corridors and timers for the lighting to save energy. In addition, a green roof over the relaxation area provides better thermal insulation, rainwater storage and greater biodiversity.

As a guest, you can help promote sustainability by opting out of daily room cleaning and hanging the relevant sign on the outside of your room door by 8.00 am. Travelling in a climate-friendly way by train and using the free beach bus also significantly reduces the environmental footprint of your stay.

For a one-week stay including meals, the journey to and from the hotel accounts for around 80 per cent of the total CO₂ emissions of the trip on average. That is why the Hotel Sonnengut recommends travelling by train, combined with the free spa bus from Bad Birnbach railway station directly to the hotel.

Garden & Outdoor area

The 3,000-square-metre garden features, amongst other things, a barefoot path, a boules court, daybeds, a sun deck, a wooden deck right next to the outdoor pool and a Kneipp pool. This makes the garden the ideal place to relax outdoors on warm days.

Yes, the Hotel Sonnengut is ideal for a stay not only in winter but especially in summer. The freshwater pool can be fully opened when the weather is fine, and there is also a large garden, a pool terrace and a wide range of outdoor activities such as golf, cycling and walking.

Yes, the freshwater pool has a retractable roof and sliding glass doors that can be opened fully in fine weather. This effectively creates an open-air pool right in the middle of the garden, surrounded by a sunbathing lawn.

Yes, in summer you can enjoy food and drink both on the Pool Bar terrace and on the Sonnengut terrace by the restaurant. The hotel’s courtyard also provides a lovely spot to relax outdoors.

Yes, in the summer there are regular outdoor events such as sundowner evenings with a DJ on the pool terrace, as well as the annual summer festival in Bad Birnbach with live music and a balloon glow, the Sonnengut wine party, the Spanish Festival and the Italian Evening. These events complement the wellness programme by offering a sociable summer experience in the open air.

In summer, the area around the Hotel Sonnengut is the perfect place to enjoy golf, cycling, hiking and Nordic walking in what is known as the ‘Tuscany of Lower Bavaria’. After an active day outdoors, the freshwater pool with its retractable roof and the FRIMAS snow and ice mist bath provide the perfect way to cool off.

Events at the hotel

The Hotel Sonnengut regularly hosts themed evenings, such as an Italian evening with live music, a truffle menu in the Hirschstube, or seasonal celebrations such as the harvest festival, St Nicholas’s Eve and the ‘Wine & Dine’ menu in autumn in the Hirschstube. Special events such as the summer festival in Bad Birnbach are also featured in the hotel’s calendar of events.

The current calendar of events at the Hotel Sonnengut can be viewed on the ‘Events at the Hotel’ page of the website, where all upcoming dates are listed in chronological order. The hotel also provides information on short-notice events on site.

That depends on the event in question: some events, such as summer parties or live music evenings, are free to attend, whilst special themed menus, such as the truffle menu or the wine party, must be booked and paid for separately. Details regarding prices and booking can be found in the description of each event.

External guests who are not staying at the hotel are also welcome to attend all events, provided they book in advance. 

Seminars & Conferences

Depending on the seating arrangement, each of the two meeting rooms at the Hotel Sonnengut can accommodate up to 50 people in theatre-style seating; when combined as a single space, they can accommodate up to 90 people. For smaller meetings, the U-shaped seating arrangement is ideal for up to 30 participants.

All meeting rooms at the Hotel Sonnengut are equipped with Wi-Fi access, a whiteboard (in one meeting room only), noticeboards, flipcharts and a presenter’s kit for presentations and talks. The rooms can also be darkened, making them suitable for projector presentations.

Yes, the Hotel Sonnengut offers a supporting programme for conferences featuring outdoor activities such as an introductory golf session at the nearby Bella Vista Golf Park, canoeing or rubber dinghy trips, archery and a high ropes course. This allows the conference to be combined with a team-building experience.

Sonnengut – The Culture of Pampering

Yes, the gourmet dining experience at the Hotel Sonnengut corresponds exactly to the half-board package booked, which includes breakfast and a multi-course dinner. The name particularly emphasises the culinary experience, which features a breakfast buffet with live cooking, a daily midday snack and varying menus/buffet in the evening.

The gourmet dining experience at the Hotel Sonnengut includes a generous, healthy breakfast buffet, a light lunch in the restaurant, and, in the evening, a culinary experience featuring live cooking, a changing gala menu, and a salad and starter buffet. Lactose-free and gluten-free dishes are also available on request. Dinner is served from 6.00 pm to 8.30 pm in the Sonnengut Restaurant.

Coffee, tea, water and juices are included with breakfast. Drinks are not automatically included with dinner as part of the half-board package. However, in the pool area, guests have free access to Grander water, tea and fresh fruit. Check-in is also traditionally accompanied by a glass of Prosecco, juice or Grander water.

Yes, the Sonnengut Restaurant serves a light lunch every day from 1.30 pm to 2.30 pm, including on the day of arrival. This means guests do not have to wait for dinner when they arrive.

Yes, the Hotel Sonnengut offers lactose- and gluten-free meals on request as part of the half-board package booked. Guests with special dietary requirements should ideally mention this when booking, or at the very latest when they arrive at reception.

Yes, as part of the Hotel Sonnengut’s day spa packages, you can enjoy some of the culinary treats as a midday snack. You are welcome to book the evening meal or buffet as an extra.  
 

The Hotel Sonnengut features the Sonnengut Restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the terrace for al fresco dining, and Arthur’s 1994 Bar for cocktails and drinks in the evening. The bar opens from 7.30 pm on Sundays to Wednesdays and from 5.30 pm on Thursdays to Saturdays.

Our Hirschstube can be booked exclusively for small parties of up to 30 people.

Breakfast

The breakfast buffet at the Hotel Sonnengut is open from Monday to Saturday from 7.30 am to 10.30 am, and on Sundays and public holidays until 11.00 am. It is a generous, healthy breakfast buffet. 

No, the Hotel Sonnengut does not offer a separate breakfast for early risers or late risers. Guests arriving or departing outside regular breakfast hours can order a packed lunch instead, subject to an additional charge.

Yes, room service for breakfast is available at the Hotel Sonnengut for an additional charge. Guests can collect the relevant room service menu, which lists the options available, from reception.

Restaurant

Breakfast at the Sonnengut Restaurant is served from Monday to Saturday from 7.30 am to 10.30 am, and on Sundays and public holidays until 11.00 am. Dinner is served daily from 6.00 pm to 8.30 pm; guests should arrive at the restaurant by 7.30 pm at the latest.

Hotel guests who have booked half-board will automatically have their dinner at the Sonnengut Restaurant; a separate table reservation is not usually necessary. External guests must make a booking by calling +49 85633050 or emailing info@sonnengut.de.

Private celebrations

Yes, at the Hotel Sonnengut, private functions such as family celebrations, milestone birthdays or anniversaries for up to 30 people can be hosted. Our Hirschstube is available exclusively for this purpose.

Yes, events at the Hotel Sonnengut can easily be combined with an overnight stay for the hosts or guests travelling from out of town. 

Overview of the wellness area

The spa area at the Hotel Sonnengut covers around 3,000 square metres. This includes a thermal pool filled with Bad Birnbach thermal water at 34 degrees, a freshwater pool with a retractable roof, a brine pool, an indoor hot whirlpool, a large sauna area and the ‘Rottufer’ relaxation area.

The water park and relaxation area are open daily from 7.00 am to 9.00 pm, the sauna area daily from 12.00 pm to 7.00 pm, and the Kelo outdoor sauna from 1.00 pm to 8.00 pm. The fitness room is available to guests daily from 7.00 am to 10.00 pm.

Yes, use of the spa area, which covers around 3,000 square metres, is included in the room rate for hotel guests. Even on the day of arrival and departure, the wellness area can be used free of charge from 1.00 pm and until 6.00 pm respectively.

The water park is open to all guests of all ages, whilst the sauna area is restricted to those aged 16 and over out of consideration for other guests. This means that families can enjoy the pool area together, whilst the sauna area is primarily reserved for adults.

The Hotel Sonnengut offers a wide range of treatments, from classic massages and facials to manicures and pedicures. In addition, there is a medical wellness centre offering health-focused treatments and targeted health programmes.

The thermal water at the Hotel Sonnengut comes directly from the Bad Birnbach spring and is fed into the 16×16-metre thermal pool at a temperature of around 34 degrees. In addition, there is a separate brine bath and a fresh-water pool, allowing guests to choose between different water qualities.

Yes, the Hotel Sonnengut offers a day spa package for day visitors who are not staying overnight. This means that even non-hotel guests can enjoy the 3,000-square-metre spa area, complete with thermal baths and sauna facilities, for a day.

Pools / Water World

The Hotel Sonnengut features a thermal pool with healing water at 34 degrees, a freshwater pool with a retractable roof at 28 degrees, and a brine pool at 33 degrees. The facilities are complemented by a Kneipp pool and an indoor hot whirlpool filled with thermal water at 36 degrees.

The water park, including all the pools, is open daily from 7.00 am to 9.00 pm. On the day of arrival and departure, you can even use the pool area free of charge from 1.00 pm and until 6.00 pm respectively, even if your room is not yet ready.

Yes, the freshwater pool has a retractable roof that can be opened or closed depending on the weather. This means the pool can be used all year round, whatever the weather.

Yes, the saltwater pool at the Hotel Sonnengut has a water temperature of around 33 degrees and 3% salinity and is particularly suitable for guests who appreciate the relaxing effects of saltwater on the skin and muscles. It complements the thermal and fresh-water pools by offering an additional water quality option.

Spa

The thermal water at the Hotel Sonnengut comes directly from the Bad Birnbach spring.

The thermal water at Bad Birnbach stimulates blood circulation, relieves muscle and joint pain and enhances general well-being. It also has a beneficial effect on the skin, which often looks fresher and more radiant after a bath in the healing water.

The thermal pool at the Hotel Sonnengut has a water temperature of around 34 degrees. There is also a saltwater pool at 33 degrees, an indoor pool at 28 degrees and an indoor hot whirlpool at 36 degrees to suit different preferences for water temperature.

Yes, through the Hotel Sonnengut’s day spa packages, guests who are not staying overnight can also use the thermal baths and the entire spa area for a day. These day packages are available between 9.00 am and 8.00 pm.

Sauna

The sauna area at the Hotel Sonnengut comprises:
•  an outdoor Kelo sauna at around 90 degrees
•  a sanarium at 60 degrees
•  a steam bath at around 45 degrees
•  a Finnish sauna with ‘Vitality Boost’ at 80 degrees
•  and our highlight, the FRIMAS snow and ice mist bath. 

This means guests can choose from a range of temperature levels and sauna experiences.

The sauna area at the Hotel Sonnengut is open to guests aged 16 and over. This age restriction is intended to ensure a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere in the sauna for all guests.

The sauna area is open daily from 12:00 to 19:00; the Kelo outdoor sauna is also open from 13:00 to 20:00. After a sauna session, guests can relax in the ‘Rottufer’ relaxation area or cool down in our FRIMAS snow and ice mist bath.

Yes, the sauna infusion is one of the complimentary services included at the Hotel Sonnengut takes place in the Kelo outdoor sauna at 90 degrees. The Finnish sauna with Vitality Boost features an automatic infusion several times a day. 
Guests can find out the exact times for the infusion at the wellness reception or from the notice board in the sauna area.

As in most German saunas, the sauna area at the Hotel Sonnengut is a clothing-free zone, which is why guests enter the sauna without swimwear. The hotel provides a cosy bathrobe for the walk to the sauna and for use in the relaxation area.

Treatments (massage, beauty, etc.)

The Hotel Sonnengut offers classic treatments such as massages, body wraps and baths, as well as regional wellness treatments using ingredients sourced from the Bavarian countryside. In addition, there are international treatments on offer, such as Ayurvedic treatments, a Rasul bath based on the Oriental bathing tradition, and a hammam.

At the Hotel Sonnengut, guests can choose from a range of treatments, including full-body massages using special massage cups to stimulate blood circulation, as well as back massages featuring gentle stretching techniques to relieve tension. Sports massages and special treatments for children are also part of the massage programme.

A Rasul bath is an oriental beauty treatment involving a full-body exfoliation under herbal steam, during which various nourishing pastes are applied to the skin. The Hotel Sonnengut offers this treatment in an exclusive private spa designed specifically for this purpose.

Day Spa

The Day Spa at the Hotel Sonnengut includes a welcome glass of Prosecco, a spa bag containing a bathrobe and towels, all-day access to the spa facilities, and a midday snack including Grander water. Depending on the package booked, a personalised treatment such as a massage or facial is also included.

The Sonnengut Day Spa can be booked daily between 9.00 am and 8.00 pm. This means day guests can enjoy a full day in the spa area without having to stay overnight at the hotel.

The Medical Wellness Centre at the Hotel Sonnengut is a wellness facility where treatments focus on health-promoting elements. It utilises tried-and-tested, scientifically verifiable methods, delivered by experienced therapists.

Classic wellness treatments at the Hotel Sonnengut are primarily about relaxation and indulgence, whilst medical wellness is specifically geared towards health-related goals such as stress relief, recovery or prevention. Both types of treatment can be combined as you wish during your stay.

No, there is no doctor on duty at the Hotel Sonnengut.

The Medical Wellness Centre is particularly suitable for guests who wish to actively tackle fatigue, stress or physical ailments, for example as part of a short-term treatment programme. Guests who simply wish to improve their general wellbeing will also benefit from the health programmes on offer.

The AGES Compact Course is a programme offered by Rottal Terme Bad Birnbach, which can be combined with a stay at the Hotel Sonnengut.

An open spa treatment makes targeted use of the healing properties of Bad Birnbach’s mineral water and is tailored to the individual needs of each guest. It is particularly suitable for guests who wish to specifically support their health over the course of a longer stay. The spa treatment must be discussed with and approved by your health insurance provider in advance.

The Medical Wellness Centre’s range of facilities includes, amongst other things, classes such as Nordic walking and Pilates, as well as access to the hotel’s own fitness room. 

Active in the region

The region surrounding the Hotel Sonnengut is also known as the ‘Lower Bavarian Tuscany’ due to its gently rolling hills and abundance of sunshine. Another special feature is its location within the so-called Bavarian Spa Triangle comprising Bad Birnbach, Bad Griesbach and Bad Füssing, which is connected by an underground thermal water network covering some 5,900 square metres.

Sport and activities at the hotel

No, with the hotel’s own gym and the free activity programme, there’s plenty to do right here on the premises. However, for golf, cycling and hiking, most routes start right on the hotel’s doorstep in Bad Birnbach.

The room rate at the Hotel Sonnengut includes, amongst other things, use of the fitness room, the free activity programme and the hire of the hotel’s own bicycles and mountain bikes. Only a few extras, such as e-bikes or green fees at the golf courses, incur an additional charge.

The fitness room at the Hotel Sonnengut is equipped with Life Fitness and Technogym machines and is open daily from 7.00 am to 10.00 pm. Children under the age of 16 may only use the fitness room when accompanied by an adult.

Yes, guests at the Hotel Sonnengut can borrow the hotel’s own bicycles and mountain bikes free of charge; e-bikes are available for a fee. For safety reasons, guests’ own e-bike batteries must not be charged in their hotel rooms, but only in the designated bicycle storage room.

Excursion destinations

Yes, the city of Passau – known as the ‘City of Three Rivers’ – is around 50 kilometres away and, with its historic old town and St Stephen’s Cathedral, makes for a great day trip from the Hotel Sonnengut. It is here that the three rivers – the Danube, the Inn and the Ilz – converge, giving the city its distinctive nickname.

As well as Passau, it’s well worth taking a trip to the Baroque town of Schärding, the Pullman City Western town, the pilgrimage town of Altötting, and Burghausen Castle, which is considered to be the longest castle complex in Europe. The Lower Inn European Nature Reserve, the Massing Open-Air Museum and Bruder Konrad Hof in Parzham near Bad Griesbach are also popular destinations for day trips.

Yes, the Hotel Sonnengut is situated right in Bad Birnbach, so you can set off on foot from the hotel onto over 30 different, well-signposted walking trails without having to travel anywhere. The start and end points of most routes are in Bad Birnbach itself.

There are walking trails all around the Hotel Sonnengut, ranging from gentle strolls to more challenging long-distance routes, so that both families with children and keen walkers can find a route to suit them. Most of the paths are unpaved, which makes the walks particularly gentle on the joints.

Yes, the walking trails around the Hotel Sonnengut and Bad Birnbach are very well signposted and well-maintained. For more detailed guidance, we also recommend using a map or the Bad Birnbach walking portal.

Yes, depending on the activity programme or package, the Hotel Sonnengut offers short guided walks. The Bad Birnbach Tourist Board organises guided walks and themed walks that provide an in-depth insight into the region’s nature and culture.
