Team Sonnengut

People have always sought places where body and mind can come to rest. Thermal baths have been among them for centuries.

Their history reaches far back into antiquity and is still being written today. Wellnesshotel Sonnengut also stands in this tradition, delighting its guests for 50 years with the soothing thermal water of the Chrysantiquelle in Bad Birnbach. Here, we tell the story of how simple healing springs became modern wellness oases.

Ancient healing springs

People recognized the healing powers of warm spring water early on. Bathing played an important role in Greek and Roman culture, and even then people recommended using healing springs to relieve various ailments.

The Roman baths added another dimension. Bathhouses were places of relaxation, but also of exchange and sociability – people met there. To make the hot spring water usable, the Romans developed sophisticated techniques and built bath complexes of remarkable size. Some of them still stand today. They laid the foundation for a tradition that has endured for thousands of years.

Modern wellness oases

Over time, the idea of what a thermal spa is changed. Simple healing baths evolved into extensive facilities.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, bathing culture in Europe experienced a renaissance as health and well-being became more important in society. What had previously been reserved for the nobility and the wealthy became accessible to many more people. The baths were modernized and expanded to include massages, saunas, and wellness treatments.

Today, they are about more than treating physical complaints. A thermal spa is a place to switch off and regenerate – and the combination of the healing power of water and modern wellness has made many of them popular travel destinations.

The spa at Wellnesshotel Sonnengut

Our spa in Bad Birnbach is also part of this story. For 50 years, it has welcomed the healing waters of the Chrysantiquelle, known for its particularly hot, mineral-rich water.

It rises to the surface from a depth of more than 1,600 meters at a temperature of 70 °C, rich in minerals such as sodium, calcium, and potassium. These ingredients can help relax the muscles, stimulate circulation, and support your body’s regeneration.

The best way to experience it is for yourself. Treat yourself to a long soak or one of our many wellness treatments and let the power of nature surround you – just as it has for generations before you.
